History, Affiliations and Rankings
In 1864, the Nevada Constitution called for the establishment of a "State University" that would teach agriculture, mechanic arts, and mining. The University of Nevada, Reno was established ten years later. The Institution of Nevada, Reno, has delivered on its promise of delivering a better future for Nevada inhabitants since its founding in 1874 as the state's first university. The University has academic affiliations with Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) and Space-grant. It is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities. NWCCU is a non-profit membership organization that is recognized by the United States Department of Education as the regional authority on educational quality and institutional performance in the seven-state Northwest region. The University of Nevada, Reno is ranked #141-150 in the QS US University Ranking 2022. The Times Higher Education positioned it at #344th in the US College Ranking 2022.
Infrastructure, Campuses and Courses
The University's campus combines a current high-impact research university setting with the University's original 10-acre physical footprint when it was re-established in Reno in the 1880s. The 290-acre campus is divided into three sections: a historic precinct with built landscape features and late 19th and early 20th century buildings added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1987, a mid-campus area with fall/spring foliage areas and modern architecture, and a northern quadrant with the University's brand new and most technically sophisticated buildings. With 460+ undergraduate and graduate degree, certificate and minor programs, the University can help students discover and refine their voice. The university is well-known for its strong research activity, particularly in the fields of civil engineering, disaster engineering, and large-scale structure testing and modelling.
Accomplishments and Alumni
The University is renowned as a high-impact institution because it is the state's land-grant university and is listed among the top research universities in the country by the Carnegie Foundation. Students and teachers are tackling today's most critical issues and laying the groundwork for the state's future generation of leaders. In terms of student enrolment, number of National Merit scholars, student diversity, faculty success and productivity, and infrastructure, the University has grown at a dynamic and record-setting rate during the last decade. In stark contrast to the first few decades of the University of Nevada, Reno's existence, the present University of Nevada, Reno has experienced unprecedented expansion. The alumni are a vital part of the College community. They are leaders in their fields, innovators of change, and the most important role models. Some of the notable alumni are Colin Kaepernick, American activist, Marion Motley, American football player and Gina Carano, American actress.
Student Diversity and Visiting Companies
The student population enrolled at University of Nevada, Reno is truly diverse and consists of people from all sorts of backgrounds. The University of Nevada, Reno has a total undergraduate enrollment of 16,852 students (fall 2020), with 46 percent male and 54 percent female students. Students from all around the world are welcome at the university. The Associated Students of the University of Nevada (ASUN) officially recognizes approximately 250 clubs and organizations. Some of the top employers of university’s graduates are Tesla, Amazon, Microsoft and Google.
