Study Abroad: Japanese MEXT Scholarship 2023
The Government of Japan opens MEXT Scholarships for international students pursuing undergraduate degrees and research programmes from Japanese universities and those receiving preparatory education in the native language of the country. 

The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) of Japan provides scholarships to overseas students enrolled in UG and Research programmes at universities in Japan. A student acquiring preparatory education in the Japanese language and opting for different subjects before the university placements are also eligible for the MEXT scholarship programme.

Also, this scholarship is available to overseas students who have chosen Social Science and Humanities or Natural Sciences subjects as their majors in UG programmes. Beneficiaries are not allowed to change their streams after availing of the financial aid. 

However, MEXT offers 117,000 yen per month to each beneficiary. It also provides additional 2000 yen to 3000 yen per month to students engaged in research in designated fields. Moreover, the MEXT scholarship includes tuition fees, entrance examination fees, matriculation fees, and travel expenses to and from Japan.

MEXT Scholarship Eligibility Criteria

Here are the eligibility requirements to apply for the MEXT scholarship:

  • The candidate must be a national of the country that has diplomatic ties with the land of the rising sun.
  • The applicant must be of 18 years of age or above on the date of admission to the university.
  • The student must have completed 10+2 from a certified education board in countries other than Japan.
  • However, they/she/he must have the desire to learn Japanese.
  • Also, overseas students must have a health certificate signed by a physician/doctor
  • Moreover, an international citizen must have a student visa. 

Courses Included under MEXT Scholarship

Overseas students who have selected Social Science and Humanities or Natural Sciences are considered for this scholarship. Additionally, the table below consists of the “Courses” and “Majors” which students can select from:
