Study Abroad: Band Score Requirement in IELTS Changed for Students Applying for Canada under SDS

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) have made changes in the overall requirement of 6.0 bands in the IELTS Academic Test. The new policy removes the need for IELTS Academic test takers to score a minimum of 6.0 bands in all individual sections of the test.

The changes are applicable to students applying via Student Direct Stream (SDS) category for Canada study permits. The new policy will come into effect from August 10 2023.

Aim of Modifying IELTS Test Requirement 

The change in the IELTS requirement is going to offer greater opportunities to talented students globally to achieve their educational goals in Canada. Students who are interested in studying in Canada can take advantage of the latest English test requirements. Also, the removal of the minimum score requirement in IELTS is a more holistic and inclusive approach to evaluating students.

The SDS is accessible to students who are applying from specific countries. These include India, Morocco, Pakistan, Antigua and Barbuda, Brazil, China, Colombia, Costa Rica, Peru, Philippines, Senegal, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, and also Vietnam.
