Q- Describe an activity that you usually do that wastes your time.
Ans: Scrolling through my Instagram feed is a habit that I believe I inadvertently engage in and that eventually wastes a lot of my precious time. This habit of mine has actually cost me a lot of time while providing me with nothing of value. Although I am aware of my activities and their negative consequences, engaging in such an activity is a pet peeve of mine which I hope to rectify as soon as possible.
When I think about it, perusing my Instagram Feed has never resulted in my gaining anything worthwhile, but has always resulted in me wasting my time. Not only that, but I believe Instagram feeds on one’s voyeuristic inclination. The feature that makes the platform so addictive and harmful is that it allows us to view others, or rather a facade of them that is promoted and presented in the best way possible. We see only a piece of people’s lives in its most publicised form, to the point where it begins to appear fabricated. However, we are still so engrossed and invested in other people’s lives and what they are doing that we forget we are only seeing a piece of the mosaic. And, in my opinion, this temperament may be quite detrimental to one’s self-esteem since we begin to wish to live the life of others and enjoy all the goodness they are enjoying. We begin to compare ourselves to others, which leads to unneeded and unhealthy competitiveness and negativity. That is why I believe my habit of scrolling through Instagram feeds is more than simply a form of procrastination; it has also negatively impacted my personal outlook on life and the world in general.
Furthermore, I believe that my practice of incessantly scrolling through Instagram has resulted in me developing a propensity to prefer short format content over lengthier ones, implying that my attention span has shortened with time. This, I believe, is not just an issue with me; with the rise of Instagram reels and mindless short-format content in general, people have developed a taste for content that lasts only a few seconds, resulting in them not appreciating art or anything that requires a certain level of comprehension. People nowadays prefer things that do not require much thought, which is a cause for concern, as the rise of Instagram reels and social media has begun to seep its tendrils into the minds of the younger generation, rendering them incapable of having profound thoughts or opinions.
As a result, in my opinion, this bad habit of aimlessly scrolling through Instagram should be prohibited not only by me but also by the majority of today’s youth, as it not only wastes time but is also harmful to one’s mind and conscience.
