Q. Some children nowadays take sports seriously while others play sports in their free time. Is this a positive or negative development?

Ans: In modern times, it is noticed that some children take sports very seriously, while others take part in sports only for leisure. This trend is certainly a negative development.

cta

From an early age, these children encounter the constant need to excel in sports, developing the fear of failure in their lives. All of this can have detrimental effects on their mental health. For instance, a child who is a competitive swimmer can experience a night full of anxiety, fear and stress, if they have a major competition the next day. This constant stress leads to feelings of constant burnout, a state of emotional, physical and mental exhaustion.

Moreover, their training schedules and demands of sports can cause physical injuries such as stress fractures and tendonitis. These injuries are common in young athletes who are in intensive training and can have long-term consequences on their physical health. For example, if a young football player suffers from a knee injury due to overtraining, it can potentially end his sports career.

On the other hand, children who play sports in their leisure time might not have its full benefits. This is because such casual participation does not build discipline, teamwork, or resilience in one’s life. Thus, these children have a high probability of missing the benefits that come with following sports regularly such as having scholarships or reservations.

To conclude, although playing sports has various benefits, the trend of some children taking sports seriously while others playing it in their free time has some negative effects. Therefore, parents, educators and coaches must guide children to have a balance between sports and other aspects of life to ensure the overall development of the child.
