IELTS Daily Essay Topic: Some people think that it is necessary to use animals for testing medicines or products intended for human use.

Brainstorming Ideas

a) It has given various significant breakthroughs as through this method various life-saving drugs were invented.

b) Apart from this, the animals used for the experiment were specially bred for this purpose, ensuring precise results and minimal impact on the wildlife.

c) The suffering of these animals can never be justified especially when other options exist.

d) These tests are often unnecessary, particularly in cases of cosmetic testing.

e) There are differences in the psychology of animals and humans which can lead to misleading results.

Q. Some People think that it is necessary to use animals for testing medicines or products intended for human use. Others, however, criticize this as animal cruelty. Discuss both of these views and give your own opinion.

Ans: In the field of medical research and product development, the use of animals to do research is a matter of debate. Some individuals state that these experiments are essential for human progress, while others argue that it is cruel and unnecessary. I agree with the latter view.

People who favour animal testing say that these experiments have led to significant scientific breakthroughs. Because of this, many life-saving drugs came into being and these trials paved the way for new medical innovations, including the cure of diseases such as cancer and AIDS. In addition to this, animals that were used in these experiments were specifically bred for this purpose. They are not wild creatures but rather very carefully selected subjects. Researchers contend that the controlled environment in which these experiments occur ensures precise results and minimizes the impact on wild animals.

On the other hand, critics emphasize the cruelty of subjecting animals to painful experiments, arguing that the suffering endured by these creatures can never be justified, especially when alternative options exist. Many argue that these tests are often unnecessary, particularly in cases such as cosmetic testing where human volunteers could provide more relevant data. Additionally, critics point out that differences in psychology between animals and humans can lead to misleading results, and variations in biology mean that findings from animal studies may not directly apply to humans. Relying solely on animal experiments, therefore, risks compromising human well-being.

In conclusion, though scientific progress is important, it should never come at the expense of animal suffering. Alternate solutions such as computer simulations and human trials can provide more valuable insights without causing harm to innocent animals. So, I consider it imperative to move away from the use of animal testing.
