Q. Apart from making money, businesses also have social responsibilities. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Ans. In today’s modern, interconnected, and globalised world, businesses have more social responsibilities, beyond profit making.  I fully agree with this, as they have a direct impact on the communities they are part of.

Businesses are an important part of the communities in which they operate. Their actions have direct social, economic and environmental impacts on these communities. Therefore, businesses must adopt sustainable practices that contribute positively to society. For instance, companies can engage in corporate social responsibility initiatives like reducing carbon footprints, supporting local charities, or investing in renewable energy sources. These actions not only benefit society but also enhance the company’s reputation and brand image. 

Apart from this, businesses also have a responsibility towards their employees. Ensuring that employees receive fair wages, work in a safe environment, and have opportunities for career development are essential aspects of social responsibility. Companies like Google and Microsoft are known for their employee-centric policies, which not only improve employee satisfaction but also increase productivity and reduce turnover rates.

In addition to this, businesses play a pivotal role in addressing societal issues such as poverty, inequality, and education. By investing in community development programs or supporting educational initiatives, companies can contribute to the betterment of society. One notable example is the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, funded by Microsoft’s Bill Gates, which has made significant strides in improving global health and education.

In conclusion, while the primary objective of any business is to generate profit, it is equally important for businesses to recognise and fulfil their social responsibilities. Engaging in socially responsible practices not only benefits society but also enhances the company’s sustainability and profitability in the long run.
