Types of Subject-Verb Agreement
Subject-verb agreements are of various types. Let us understand each one of them one by one.
Indefinite pronouns
It is a pronoun that does not refer to any amount, person, or thing. Example: Someone left their umbrella in the hallway.
Here “someone” is the indefinite pronoun. It doesn’t refer to a specific person but rather to any unspecified person.
Collective nouns
It is a noun referring to a collective of things that are taken as a whole. Example: An army of ants marched across the forest floor.
In this sentence, “army” is the collective noun that refers to a group of ants.
Compound subjects
Compound subjects are where there is more than one noun or pronoun as the subject of the sentence. Example: John and Mary went to the store.
In this sentence, “John” and “Mary” together form the compound subject.
