History of National Human Trafficking Awareness Day

To understand the history of National Human Trafficking Awareness Day, here is its timeline:

2000: The Trafficking Victims Protection Act (TVPA) is passed was in 2000. It marked the beginning of taking steps in the direction of combating the global practice of human trafficking. 

2007: In 2007, the United States Senate proclaimed January 11th as National Human Trafficking Awareness Day. interestingly, the day runs parallel with the anniversary of the TVPA enactment. 

2010: President Barack Obama designated January as National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month in 2010. It was a major step in enhancing the overall focus on taking the right steps towards removing evil from society. 

Human Trafficking Awareness Day Theme 2024

The Human Trafficking Awareness Day theme for 2024 has not been released yet by the official sources. Its previous year’s theme of 2023 was to wear blue and raise awareness about how human trafficking negatively impacts not only the lives of the people forcefully and unlawfully involved but also the overall community as well.

Human Trafficking Data Collection Statistics (2023): Bureau of Justice Statistics 

The Bureau of Justice Statistics is the USA’s source for criminal justice statistics. To create its report, the BJS covers a wide range of topics and activities. 

• According to its report published in October 2023, around 2,000 people were referred to U.S. attorneys for human trafficking offences in 2021. 
• This shows a concerning increase of 49% from the people referred in the year 2011.
• Out of 1,197 defendants who were charged in federal court for human trafficking in 2021, 60% were white and 92% were male.
