This day was started in 2015 when a website called ScreenwritingU was developed to provide courses and resources to aspiring screenplay writers.

History of National Screenwriters Day
This Day was founded by the leading educational source for budding screenwriters in the world i.e. ScreenwritingU.com on 5 January 2015. The purpose of this day is to highlight the efforts of the screenplay writers behind the scenes.
The first screenplay was written in 1902 by Georges Méliès for the film “A Trip to the Moon.” then in 1902, an organisation named the Screen Writer’s Guild of America for formed. The Screenplay Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay was awarded to George Wells for Designing Woman in 1957. Then in 2016, the first National Screenwriters Day was celebrated by ScreenwritingU. In 2018, Jordan Peele, the first African-American to win an Oscar Award for Best Original Screenplay for Get Out.
