Ganesh Chaturthi is a Hindu festival dedicated to Lord Ganesha. This festival is celebrated to commemorate the birth of Lord Ganesha. This year, the festival will be held from 19 September to 28 September. Here’s all you need to know about this famous festival.

Ganesh Chaturthi 2023: History 

The celebration of this festival dates back to the 18th century when the Peshawas, who were the followers of Lord Ganesha started a public Vinayaka celebration in Pune. 

Although, during the British Rule, this festival was not celebrated with so much energy and love. But things changed in 1893 Lokmanya Tilak, as it played a key role in the festival becoming a huge hit among the people again. 

Ganesh Chaturthi 2023: Significance

Ganesh Chaturthi is a day which celebrates the rebirth of the Lord Ganesha which also represents new beginnings. The auspicious festival celebrates the birth of Lord Ganesha- the god of good fortune, wisdom and prosperity. This festival is majorly celebrated in Maharashtra by all the people. 

Ganesh Chaturthi 2023: Rituals

Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated with four primary rituals:

Prana Pratishta (Invocation of Life): This is the first day of Ganesh Chaturthi. On this day, the priest recites mantras and conducts rituals. 

Shodashopachara (16-fold Worship): This ritual is also performed on the first day. In this, the ritual involves offering 16 different types of offerings to Ganesha. These offerings include flowers, fruits, sweets, incense, lamps, and water.

Uttarpuja (Final Worship): This ritual takes place on the 10th day of Ganesh Chaturthi. On this day, Lord Ganesha is bid farewell. The priest chants several mantras and even performs mantras to please Ganesha and seek his blessings. 

Ganpati Visarjan (Immersion of the Idol): On this day, the devotees recite a mantra and immerse Lord Ganesh in a river or ocean. Doing so signifies that the festival is concluded and that the return of Ganesha to his celestial abode.
