Dhirubhai Ambani was born on 28 December 1932. So, every year 28 December is celebrated as the birth anniversary of Dhirubhai Ambani. He was born in Chorwad in Junagadh State, Gujarat, India. Dhirubhai Ambani was the son of Hirachand Gordhanbhai Ambani and Jamnaben Ambani. He belongs to the Modh Baniya community.

Story of Dhirubhai Ambani

As we all know Dhirubhai Ambani founded Reliance Industries in 1958, and it is the most successful business company in India. But the story of Dhirubhai Ambani from rags-to-riches is inspirational to all the young entrepreneurs. 

Dhirubhai Ambani Birth Place

He was born in Chorwad, Junagadh in Gujarat. Dhirubhai Ambani was one of the three sons of a school teacher. The financial condition of his family was not good. He was a school dropout and he had to do some work to earn money only after his 10th class. It was just the start of his hustle towards becoming the biggest businessman in India.

Moved to Aden and Worked at Petrol Station

At the age of 17, he went to Aden, Yemen to seek work for earning. He was a dispatch clerk at Besse & Co. Later he became the manager of the the company’s oil-filling station in Aden. In 1958, he left Aden and returned to India to set up his venture. 

Returned to India and Started Reliance

Dhirubhai Ambani Returned to India in 1958. After this, he planned to initiate his business venture, a spice trading company called Reliance Commercial Corporation. In 1962, he identified a great opportunity in trading so he shifted to a new business. He purchased land in Noroda, Gujarat to set up a textile mill. Gradually, the company was growing and in 1977, it went public and released IPO. 

Dhirubhai Ambani Death Date

In 1986, Dhirubhai Ambani suffered a stroke in February after which he handed over his business empire to his sons Mukesh Ambani and Anil Ambani. He suffered a major stroke on 24 June 2002 and he died on 6 July 2002.

Honours and Recognitions

1. 2nd highest civilian award, Padma Vibhushan in 2016.
2. Lifetime Achievement Award in 2001 by The Economic Times Awards.
3. First Indian to receive Dean’s Medal by The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, on 15 June 1998.
4. Featured in the Asiaweek magazine for 3 years, 1996, 1998 and 2000.
