GST Council Waives Levy on ESOPs, Benefiting Major Companies: The GST Council decided to waive the levy on Employee Stock Ownership Plans (ESOPs), benefiting companies like Microsoft, Google, Oracle, and Walmart. These companies’ Indian employees received ESOPs from their global parents, and the Indian arms made payments subject to tax. The Council had been considering this issue for several months. Tax consultants believe this will relieve many companies scrutinized for a standard remuneration practice. Under GST law, securities and employee services are not considered goods or services and do not attract GST. 2. Nearly Half of NEET-UG Retake Students Skip Exam: The National Testing Agency (NTA) reported that 48% of students scheduled to retake the NEET-UG exam did not attend. Out of 1,563 eligible students, only 813 appeared for the retest. The retest followed a Supreme Court order allowing students who received grace marks to retake the exam. The retest was held amid an ongoing investigation into alleged irregularities in the NEET-UG exam. 3. Myanmar Nationals Outnumber Locals in Manipur Villages, Claims Student Union: The Maring Students’ Union (MSU) in Manipur claimed that Myanmar nationals outnumber locals in six Maring Naga villages. These refugees fled due to conflicts between junta forces and pro-democracy insurgents in Myanmar. The MSU acknowledged the refugees’ plight but expressed concern over the demographic shift. The statement comes after a local MLA raised similar concerns with the Chief Minister. 4. Prime Minister Modi Takes Oath for Third Term in Lok Sabha: Prime Minister Narendra Modi took oath as a member of the 18th Lok Sabha, beginning his third consecutive term. Modi retained the Varanasi seat and was the first to take the oath as the Leader of the House. National Human Rights Commission Seeks Report on Mental Health of Central Forces: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) requested a detailed report from the Ministry of Home Affairs on measures to address the mental health issues of central forces personnel. The request follows a petition highlighting suicides and fratricide incidents among armed forces due to weak mental health. 15. IMA Praises Government for NEET-UG Investigation by CBI: The Indian Medical Association (IMA) thanked the government for transferring the investigation of NEET-UG exam irregularities to the CBI.
