According to 2023 government records, more than 50% of India’s population is aged below 25, making it the youngest country in the world. The global demand for skilled workers is on the rise and with the developments in technology and artificial intelligence, many unskilled jobs are vulnerable to machines and modern technology. | ‘Good morning, respected principal ma’am, teachers, and fellow students. Today, I stand on this platform to present my views on the New Education System in India. As we are all aware, India has the largest population and is the largest democracy, but does that make India a developed and prosperous country? The answer is partly yes and partly no. We all suffered from the horrors of the COVID-19 pandemic, where schools were shut, there was a lack of healthcare facilities, no transport facilities were available, and there was an overnight lockdown in the entire country. The virus from Wuhan changed how students are educated around the world. Schools and universities were forced to adapt to online or remote education. Do you know what happened next? It exposed the digital divide. However, the shift to online learning or e-learning also gave us a glimpse of how education could change for the better in the future, and in the midst of all of this, a significant development took place in India; the government approved the National Education Policy 2020. This new education policy was introduced to pave the way for sweeping changes in the school and higher education sectors, but executing this national policy was a mammoth exercise. India is gearing up for a paradigm shift from quantity to quality in the education system. The National Education Policy 2020 replaced the 34-year-old education policy and promises to bring about major reforms for both primary and higher education. The idea of this new scheme or policy is to make education application-based and skill-oriented. Experts in the educational sector appreciated the government’s effort to bring reforms to the system and considered this a huge step forward in taking our education to the next level. In our country, there is this widespread perception that a person who can read, write, and speak is educated. While education is the ability to differentiate between real and fake, it is also the ability to discriminate between right and wrong. This is only possible if a person starts thinking independently. The New Education Policy focuses on this content to bring reforms to the Indian education system and make the youth educated and responsible. Another major focus of the New Education Policy was investment in teacher education for upskilling nationwide. Once all the pieces are in their places, then this new education policy will turn India into a sustainably equitable and vibrant knowledge society and make it a global knowledge superpower. Before the implementation of the Education Policy 2020, education in India primarily focused on access and equity in education. The objective of the new education policy is to develop smart and responsible Indians who are capable of making smart decisions and can become a source of inspiration for others. The New Education Policy includes some fundamental principles that are designed to make students feel comfortable in schools and institutions. 1. Access, Equity, and Inclusion: This new policy focuses on providing quality education to everyone, irrespective of their socio-economic background, who has access to quality education. 2. Early Childhood Care and Education: Recognising the importance of early years, the policy proposes universal access to high-quality ECCE for all children in the age group of 3-6 years by 2030. 3. Learning Flexibility: Students are free to learn their trajectories and programs and choose their paths in life based on their interests and aptitudes. 4. Curriculum and Pedagogical Restructuring: The traditional 10+2 education structure is replaced by a new 5+3+3+4 design, corresponding to the stages of a child’s development. 5. Promoting multilingualism and the power of language in education and learning. 6. Life Skills: Providing platforms and opportunities to enhance communication, cooperation, teamwork, and resilience. 7. Experimental Learning: Encouraging hands-on and practical learning experiences to emphasise experimental learning, critical thinking, and problem-solving. 8. Teacher Training and Professional Development: Enhancing teacher quality by training them with rigorous teacher training programs, continuous learning opportunities, and a merit-based structure for promotions and salary increments. 9. Rootedness and Pride in India: India’s rich and diverse, ancient and modern culture and knowledge systems and traditions. The New Education Policy 2020 replaced the 10+2 structure with 5+3+3+4 for students between 3 and 18 years of age. This new policy has given great importance to early childhood education so that students can better adapt to the new education policies. By the age of 6, our brain and cognitive functioning have developed by over 85%. Under this policy, every child by the age of 5 will move to a ‘Preparatory Class’ or ‘Balavatika’ with an ECCE-qualified teacher. The noteworthy things about this new policy are the Mid-day Meal Programme, Health check-ups, and growth monitoring at the Anganwadi system. Initiatives like Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (now the Samagra Shiksha) and the Right to Education Act in India will ensure near-universal enrolment in elementary education. India is a big country and is marking its global presence. Today, we are the fastest-growing economy and the leaders have big plans for the future. This New Education Policy 2020 will make the country a global education power and we will be the biggest asset to his great nation.
