Summary of NCERT Class 7 English An Alien Hand Chapter 6: A Tiger in the House
“A Tiger in the House” by Ruskin Bond, revolves around the discovery and domestication of a tiger cub named Timothy. Grandfather found the cub in the Terai jungle near Dehra. The cub was hiding among the roots of a banyan tree. After stumbling upon the tiger, Grandfather brought him home. Eventually, the tiger became a part of the family.
In the initial years of his life, Mahmood, the family cook, took care of Timothy. Mahmood fed him milk from a bottle. As Timothy grew, he was kept on a diet of raw mutton and cod liver oil, followed by pigeons and rabbits. The tiger cub befriends two companions: Toto, a bold monkey, and a small puppy found by Grandfather.
Also, Timothy was very playful. He often engaged in antics with the puppy and even allowed it to rest on his back. As he grew into the size of a full-grown retriever, Timothy attracted attention and caution from people during walks due to its overwhelming presence. His favourite spot in the house was the drawing-room sofa, where he reclined with dignity, snarling at anyone attempting to displace him.
However, as Timothy matures, a change occurs in his behaviour. He became less friendly, displaying signs of his wild instincts. Grandfather observes him attempting to stalk cats and other animals during walks. Also, the poultry house witnessed some scattered feathers of other animals and birds.
The tipping point comes when Timothy starts stalking Mahmoud with seemingly malicious intent. Concerned about the safety of the household, Grandfather decided that it was time for Timothy to be transferred to a zoo. Grandfather took Timothy to the zoo in a reserved first-class compartment.
Six months later, when Grandfather visited the zoo in Lucknow to check on Timothy, he was in for a shock. The tiger in Timothy’s cage is not the friendly cub he had raised but a wild and dangerous one. The real Timothy had died two months earlier from pneumonia. The story concludes with Grandfather’s realisation that he had been interacting with a ferocious tiger, thinking it was his beloved pet.
