Summary of NCERT Class 7 English An Alien Hand Chapter 5: The Bear Story
“The Bear Story” is about a lady who lives in an old house near a big forest. She has a pet bear that she rescued when it was a baby. The bear grows up to be friendly and gentle. He behaves like a big, amiable dog and gets along well with other animals and people. The lady takes care of him, and he becomes a part of the family.
The story tells about the bear’s daily life, how he eats the same food as the dogs, and how he loves fruits, especially apples. The bear, however, had some mischievous adventures in the past, like climbing trees for apples and messing with beehives, but he learned not to do those things again.
On Sundays, when the lady goes to visit her sister, she puts the bear on a chain to keep him from wandering in the forest. The bear doesn’t like it but understands. One Sunday, though, the bear decides to follow her, breaking free from the chain. The lady gets angry, tries to send him back, and even hits him with her parasol. The bear, seeming sorry, shuffles back home.
When the lady returns, she scolds the bear, thinking he misbehaved, but the cook defends him, saying he was well-behaved and waited for her all day. The lady, realizing her mistake, feels sorry for scolding the bear. The story shows the bond between the lady and her pet bear and highlights the bear’s good nature.
