The UPSC Exam, officially known as the Civil Services Examination (CSE), is a highly competitive nationwide test conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) for different posts in the government. As understood by all, there are limited attempts allowed for every individual and a set age limit to give the exam.

Understanding the UPSC Attempt Structure

The number of attempts allowed for the UPSC Civil Services Examination varies depending on the candidate’s category. The categories considered are General, Other Backward Classes (OBC), Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), and Persons with Disabilities (PwD).

Attempt Limits – Category Wise

General Category

Candidates belonging to the general category are allowed a maximum of 6 attempts to clear the UPSC Civil Services Examination. These attempts must be taken before the candidate reaches the age of 32 years.

OBC Category

Candidates belonging to the OBC category are given 9 attempts. These attempts must be made before the candidate reaches the age of 35.

SC/ST Category

These candidates get unlimited attempts till 37 years of age.

PwD Category: Candidates belonging to the PwD category are eligible for a maximum of nine attempts, similar to the OBC category. However, for candidates belonging to both the PwD and SC/ST categories, the number of attempts is unlimited.

Additional Points

Candidates belonging to the PwD category have age relaxation. 

  • The PwD candidates of the General category will get the benefit of 9 attempts till the age of 42 years.
  • The PwD candidates of the OBC category will get the benefit of 9 attempts till the age of 45 years.
  • The PwD candidates of the SC/ST category are allowed an unlimited number of attempts till the age of 47 years.
