As of June 2nd, Hyderabad’s role as a joint capital for Telangana and Andhra Pradesh has officially ended as per the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014. This change comes ten years after the state of Telangana was carved out of Andhra Pradesh in 2014.

This all started in 2014 when Telangana was established on June 2, 2014. Back then, they agreed to share Hyderabad for a decade to make things smoother. Hence, from June 2 onwards, Hyderabad will serve as the sole capital city of Telangana.

The creation of Telangana marked the realization of a long-standing demand for statehood, which was achieved on June 2, 2014, after the AP Reorganisation bill was passed in Parliament in February 2014. And regarding Hyderabad, it stated –

“On and from the appointed day (June 2), Hyderabad in the existing State of Andhra Pradesh, shall be the common capital of the state of Telangana and the state of Andhra Pradesh for such period not exceeding ten years,” said the AP Reorganisation Act.

“After the expiry of the period referred to in subsection (1), Hyderabad shall be the capital of the State of Telangana and there shall be a new capital for the State of Andhra Pradesh,” it added.

However, even after a decade apart, unresolved matters like the division of property remain a point of contention between Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. And Andhra Pradesh has declared the city of Amravati as the capital of Andhra Pradesh now.
