Biography of PV Sindhu: Pursala Venkata Sindhu, or PV Sindhu as we know her, is an Indian badminton player who is considered one of India’s most successful badminton players. She has won tournaments such as the Olympics and a gold medal in the 2019 World Championships.  Sindhu is the first and only Indian woman athlete to become the world badminton champion and the second to win two consecutive medals at the Olympic games. PV Sindhu was born in Hyderabad, India, to Telugu-speaking parents, PV Ramana and P. Vijaya.

  • Her father was a former national-level volleyball player and was born in Nirmal.
  • Her mother, P. Vijaya, was also a national-level volleyball player and was born in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh.

  • Her father was a member of the Indian volleyball team that won a bronze medal at the 1986 Seoul Asian Games and also received the Arjuna Award in 2000 for his contribution to the sport.
  • She attended Auxilium High School and St. Ann’s College for Women in Hyderabad.
  • The success of Pullela Gopichand was her inspiration to join the sport of badminton.
  • It was at the age of eight that she started playing badminton.
  • She initially learned the basics of badminton from Mehboob Ali at the Indian Railway Institute of Signal Engineering and Telecommunications in Secunderabad.
  • She then joined Pullela Gopichand’s badminton academy for advanced training.
  • Her time at the Gopochand Academy paved her way to becoming the best badminton player in India and developed her foundational skills.
  • After moving out of the academy, she trained under the South Korean coach Park Tae Sang.
  • She is currently coached by Agus Dwi Santoso, with Prakash Padukone as her mentor.
