Biography of Abhinav Bindra: Abhinav Bindra is an Indian retired sports shooter. He is best known for winning the gold medal in the men’s 10-metre air rifle competition at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. This historic win made him India’s first individual Olympic gold medalist. Furthermore, Bindra has won many accolades and awards during his entire career. On the 22nd of July 2024, Bindra was awarded the prestigious Olympic Order by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Just a few days later, on the 25th of July 2024, he had the honour of carrying the iconic Olympic torch during the relay in Paris.

Who is Abhinav Bindra? 

Abhinav Bindra was born on the 28th of September 1982, in Dehradun to Babli Bindra and Apjit Bindra. His journey from a young boy with a fascination for guns to becoming a national hero is an inspiring tale that all need to know. 

  • Bindra’s interest in shooting began at a young age when he used to watch televised shooting competitions. 
  • He studied at The Doon School and St. Stephen’s School in Chandigarh. 
  • When he realised that there was a dearth of training facilities in India, he spent most of his time training in Germany under the guidance of coach Gaby Buhlmann.
  • Furthermore, in 1998, Abhinav Bindra was only 15 when he took part in the Commonwealth Games. Interestingly, he was also the youngest participant there!

  • In 2011, the Indian Territorial Army honoured him with the title of Honorary Lieutenant Colonel.

  • After his retirement, Bindra entered into the world of business.
    • He pursued a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degree from the University of Colorado Boulder
    • Moreover, he is the founder of the Abhinav Bindra Foundation. It is an organisation which aims to improve the performance of athletes through sports science as well as technology. 
    • In addition, Bindra also has a physiotherapy and rehabilitation centre.
