The Panchayati Raj System was first introduced in the State of Rajasthan. On the 2nd of October 1959, in the district of Nagaur, Rajasthan implemented the Panchayati Raj system first in India. It was then an auspicious day as it was M.K. Gandhi’s birthday too. Considering Dussehra’s auspiciousness, on the 11th of October 1959, the then PM Jawaharlal Nehru introduced the Panchayati Raj System in Andhra Pradesh too. Additionally, the devolution of powers and finances to the local levels is the main goal of the Panchayati Raj System.

When Panchayati Raj started in India it aimed to decentralise power and form a Local Self-Government.
