History, Affiliations and Rankings

Charles University is a university situated in the heart of Prague, Czech Republic. Charles University was founded in 1348 during the rule of King of Bohemia and Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV. Eventually, it went on to become the first Studium generale north of the Alps and east of Paris.Established in 1348, Charles University is affiliated with the Coimbra Group, EUA and Europaeum. It quickly gained international acclaim after being modelled after universities in Bologna and Paris. It was founded with four faculties: theology, liberal arts, law, and medicine. Under Charles' son, King Wenceslas IV, the status of the Czech intellectual community increased. The Hussite reformist movement (which preceded the Reformation) transformed the institution; at the time, the university's rector was the religious reformer, Master Jan Hus. During the subsequent social and political revolution, the university was reduced to a single faculty - the Faculty of Liberal Arts (Facultas artium liberalium), serving as a model for succeeding Reformation schools. Charles University, the Czech university's name after independence, achieved results that put it on a level with the world's most famous academic and scientific institutions. It ranks among the top universities in the world. QS World University Rankings 2022 puts it in the 266th position. Times Higher Education 2021 ranks it at #401
