History, Affiliations and Rankings
Established in 1920, the University of Turku was established as Finnish Intelligentsia wished for a fully finish university in Turku, Finland. In 1974, the University of Turku became a public institution. In 2010, the Turku School of Economics was combined with the University of Turku, making a seventh faculty of the university. The University of Turku has affiliations with Coimbra Group and UArctic. The University of Turku ranks #291 in World University Rankings by QS and #351 - 400 in World University Rankings by the Times Higher Education 2022.
Infrastructure, Campuses and Courses
The University of Turku has a shared campus with Ă…bo Akademi University and Turku Science Park. The campus area also surrounds Turku University Hospital (TYKS) and the Student Village. The Main Building and the nearby complex were built in the 1950s and later came to know as University Hill. The campus houses the Medisiina D building which has the Faculty of Medicine. The University also have a Botanic Garden at Ruissalo as well as a research station at Seili Island. The University of Turku offers an array of bachelor's and master's degree courses across its 7 faculties and 5 independent units namely, the Faculty of Education, Law, Science and Engineering, Humanities, Social Sciences, Medicine, and School of Economics. The university also offers a plethora of Master degree programs in the English Language in subjects like Health, Biomedical, and Social Sciences.
Accomplishments and Alumni
The University of Turku has various research projects in the Peruvian Amazon. With the Peruvian Amazon Research Institute, located in Iquitos, has been researching the Amazon in the BIODAMAZ Project. The top notable alumni are Sauli Niinistö – 12th and incumbent President of Finland, Mauno Koivisto – 9th President of Finland, and Liisa Hyssälä – Member of Parliament, Minister of Health and Social Services.
Student Diversity and Visiting Companies
The University of Turku has over 20,000 students out of which 8,200 are undergraduate students, over 6,200 postgraduate students and about 1,900 doctoral students on-campus. The institute attracts diverse backgrounds students, so, students may learn from each other’s perspectives. The visiting companies on-campus are Certara, FGC Finnish Consulting Group, and Nokia.
