Madrid, the third largest city of Spain houses a five centuries old university called the University of Alcalá (UAH). Started in 1293 as Stadium Generale, the university was declared a public university in 1977. The university is located in Alcalá de Henares and is one of the oldest standing universities of Europe. It has three campuses : Alcalá City Center, Guadalajara, and an External Campus which is also the scientific technological park. The UAH grants bachelors, masters and PhD degrees in five major disciplines : Arts and Humanities, Law and Social Sciences, Sciences, Health Sciences, and Engineering and Architecture.There are currently 28,000 students enrolled in dozens of courses across 23 departments. Apart from that, there are 2,200 staff members, 450 research assistants and 140 research groups in the university. Primarily a Spanish speaking university, English is also taught here by the British Council. You have the option of either staying in shared flats or you can book an accommodation at the University residence halls which can cater to 1200 people. Dedicated to research and innovation, The UAH has four associated teaching hospitals and a Science and Technology park. The university is known for its high research output, patents and PhD thesis. The university library has been granted a European Seal of Excellence 400+ due to its services.
