History, Affiliations and Rankings

Gleason Archer, the founder of Suffolk University, made it his life's ambition to provide access to higher education to all capable students, beginning with evening Law sessions. Gleason Archer began giving law lectures in his Roxbury home's living room in 1906. He relocated the renamed Suffolk School of Law to Downtown Boston a year later. In 1909, the university issued diplomas for the first graduating class of the First Law School. The cornerstone for the Archer building on Beacon Hill was laid in 1920 by Massachusetts governor and subsequently president Calvin Coolidge. The University and its entities are accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE). The University is also associated with The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), American Bar Association (ABA), Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Management Education (CAHME), Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA), the International Association of Counselling Services (IACS) and many more organizations.

Infrastructure, Campuses and Courses

Suffolk University has been a part of Boston's bustling metropolitan setting since 1906, providing students with a genuinely immersive environment in which to live, learn, and explore. It is in the perfect place to give students the keys to a successful life and career: access, opportunity, and experience. Suffolk University offers a diverse selection of undergraduate, graduate, and law degree programs, all of which are grounded in real-world experience. They pride themselves on accessibility, which is why they offer a variety of learning options, including part-time and evening programs, credentials for working professionals, and online classes. Small class numbers also allow professors to get to know each student's name, recognize his or her potential, and form vital relationships with them. Courses are offered at the College of Arts and Sciences, the Law School, Sawyer Business School and at the international Madrid campus

Accomplishments and Alumni

The list of achievements of the university is endless. An internship is completed by 72 percent of university graduates on average. More than 50 international programs are offered by the university. The Carnegie Foundation Community Engagement Classification acknowledged the university. Suffolk University is ranked among the "Top U.S. Colleges" by the Wall Street Journal. Suffolk is ranked among the Top Universities in The Princeton Review's 2017 edition of the Best 381 Colleges in the United States. With over 85,000 combined graduates to date across a spectrum of careers and geographic regions, Suffolk alumni network can help expand students' social and professional reach. Marty Meehan, President of the University of Massachusetts, John F. Tierney, Former United States Representative and Linda Dorcena Forry, Massachusetts State Representative are few of the notable alumni.

Student Diversity and Visiting Companies

The University has a total of 6,692 full-time students, with 4,272 undergraduates and 1,198 graduate students. Students represent over 100 nationalities and come from all 50 US states. Part-Time Job Rules for International Students in the USA

  • When school is in session, your US student visa permits you to work up to 20 hours per week on campus and full-time during school breaks (up to 40 hours per week).

  • The employer must ensure that the employment should not displace (take a job away from) a US resident.

  • F1 students are permitted to work in the United States, but only under specified circumstances and in compliance with the US Citizenship and Immigration Service's complicated standards and restrictions (USCIS).

  • Many US colleges need approval from the International Student Office before taking any on-campus job, and such employment may not be permitted during a student's first semester or year.

Types of Part-Time Jobs in the USA

There are two ways international students can get part-time jobs in the USA. They can either look for on-campus jobs or off-campus jobs.

On-Campus Jobs: On-campus employment is defined as work that takes place on campus or at a school-affiliated off-campus site. Some examples are working in a campus bookshop, cafeteria, or other facilities where students may assist. To be considered for this position, you must apply at least 30 days prior to the start of school. Speak with your DSO about applying. If you're authorised, your DSO will provide you with a letter of approval, which you'll need to apply for a Social Security number (SSN).

Off-Campus Jobs: Off-campus jobs are relatively easy but not always in proximity. F1 students can gain authorization to work under certain training programmes. This form of part-time work is not difficult to acquire. However, it is only available to F1 students who have completed at least one full academic year of their programme of study and who have an economic hardship that meets the Department of Homeland Security's urgent conditions. Optional Practical Training (OPT) and Curricular Practical Training (CPT) are two programmes designed specifically for students who want to obtain experience in their field of study.
