History, Affiliations and Rankings
Nanjing University, also known as Nanking University, was founded in 1901 in Nanjing, Jiangsu, China. The university has witnessed China's evolution from a monarchy to a nationalist government and the communist regime of today's civil war. The history of the university dates back to 470 AD when the Song dynasty established the Central Imperial University (Zongmingguan) as a comprehensive institution for higher education and research in five key fields, literature, history, Confucian studies, Xuan studies and yin-yang studies. The campus was moved to Nanking and In 1382 it became known as Nanking Imperial University. In 1902, Nanking University experienced many invasions and power struggles. In 1906 the name was changed to Liangjiang Normal College. Nanjing Institute of Technology which was located on the old campus of Nanjing University and later renamed Southeast University, etc. and the university name was changed again to Nanjing Central University or Nanjing University in 1952. It is affiliated with C9, APRU, AEARU, WUN, and Service-Learning Asia Network. It is ranked #135 in Best Global Universities, at #18 in Best Global Universities in Asia and at #6 in Best Global Universities in China.
Infrastructure, Campuses and Courses
Today, Nanjing University has three campuses, Gulou, Xianlin and Pukou campuses in Nanjing. Gulou is the main campus with administrative offices. The 3 campuses are divided into 28 schools and research institutes. The Xianlin campus is located in northeast Nanjing, in the university city of Xianlin, south of the Yangtze River and Qixia Mountain, east of Purple Mountain and west of Baohua Mountain. The campus accommodates undergraduates and some graduate students.It opened in September 2009. There is a Nanjing University Xianlin Campus station on the Nanjing Subway Line 2, which connects Xianlin Campus and Gulou via subway. The Pukou Campus is located in the suburban district of Pukou, on the north side of Nanjing. High-Tech and New Industry Development Zone and became part of Nanjing University in 1993. Nanjing University offers more than 200 courses for bachelor's, masters and doctoral students. Also, it offers many short and part-time certification courses in many fields. Some of the courses offered here are Fine Arts, History, Archaeology, Journalism and Communication, Advertising, Economics, Finance, Business Administration, Accounting, Financial Management, Marketing, Sociology, Social Work, Public Administration, Mathematics, Physics, Acoustics, Astronomy, Chemistry, Engineering, Environmental Science, Geology, Ecology, Medicine, Law, Software Engineering, Architecture.
Accomplishments and Alumni
Nanjing University has many research institutes such as the Institute of Education (Graduate School of Education), Institute of Gymnastics, Institute of Arts, International School, School for Foreign Student Education, Jinling College First Class Applied Research), Institute for Advanced Study in Humanities and Social Sciences, School of Basic Science Education, Centre for Chinese and American Studies, Johns Hopkins University-Nanjing University (Hopkins Centre-Nanjing). The School of Modern Engineering and Applied Sciences was established in 2009, replacing the old School of Technology Sciences. The engineering building with an area of ??6,000 square metres was started in 2014 at the Xianlin campus. Some of the notable alumni are Chang Chi-Yun (Former Minister of Education of the Republic of China), Hua Chunying (Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China), and Yang Jiechi (Former Foreign Minister of the People's Republic of China).

The university has an enrollment of approximately 27,500 students with the attendance of more than 2,500 academic staff. In total there are around 3,500 international students from 90 countries.
