History, Affiliations and Rankings
Established in 1934, Nanjing Medical University is formerly known as Jiangsu Provincial College of Health Policy and Management situated in Jiangsu, China. In 1938 the institute's name was changed to the National Jiangsu Medical College. In 1957, the university’s campus was shifted to Nanjing, and then the name was changed to Nanjing Medical University. In 1981, the institute was authorized to provide doctoral and postgraduate degrees. Nanjing Medical University has affiliations with World Health Organizations (WHO) and the Medical Council of India. Nanjing Medical University ranks #601 - 800 in World University Rankings by the Times Higher Education 2022 and #251 - 300 in World University Rankings by QS.
Infrastructure, Campuses and Courses
Nanjing Medical University has two campuses, situated in Jiangning and Wutai. The new campus in Jiangning is 11 times bigger than the Wutai campus. The Wutai Campus is primarily used for clinical teaching and research. The library has more than 900,000 printed materials, 720,000 e-books, and 52 databases. The institute has 22 schools and one independent school. It has 24 affiliated hospitals and over 50 teaching hospitals located in Jiangsu, Shanghai, Zhejiang, and Shandong Provinces. Nanjing Medical University has one state-level key lab, four ministry-level key labs, and sixteen provincial-level key laboratories. Nanjing Medical University offers 17 bachelor’s, 73 master’s, and 48 Doctoral programs. Moreover, 6 post-doctoral research stations are also available on campus.
Accomplishments and Alumni
Nanjing University has affiliations with over 50 hospitals. Nanjing Medical University was the first university to provide a 6-year MBBS program in China and was also the first university to provide masters and doctoral degrees.NMU has received an award various times by the authority for the cause of talent-cultivation. Nanjing Medical University has carried out exchange activities and has actively made multi-model affiliation and cooperation with other institutes and universities. It has developed cooperation and academic exchange with medical in the U.S., Canada, Australia, Sweden, Japan, and others. The notable alumni of the institute are Li Lanqing, a standing committee member of CPC Central Committee Political Bureau and Vice Premier of the State Council, Wang Xuehao, a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and an expert in hepatobiliary surgery and liver transplantation, and Wang Cunyu, a foreign academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, an intellectual of the US National Academy of Medicine, a tenured chair professor at the University of California.

Nanjing Medical University have over 13,000 students on-campus. Nanjing Medical University has students from all over the world to study at the institute, due to its affordable tuition fees and programs that are also taught in English. Nanjing Medical University has over 1600 employees, including 825 skilled teaching staff, 188 professors, 252 associate professors, 422 Ph.D. advisors, and 1746 postgraduate tutors.
