Established in 1876, Johns Hopkins University is the first private research university situated in Baltimore, Maryland. The name of the university was kept after its first patron, the great American entrepreneur and activist Johns Hopkins. He gave almost $7 million for the establishment of the university and Johns Hopkins Hospital ( Considered as one of the most generous gift at that particular time in the history of United States). Daniel Coit Gilman was introduced as the first president of the institution. Johns Hopkins has international centers in Italy, China and Singapore apart from being scattered into 10 divisions on the campuses located in Maryland and Washington D.C. The Zanvyl Krieger School of Arts and Sciences and the Whiting School of Engineering are located on the Homewood campus in Baltimore's Charles village neighbourhood are the two undergraduate divisions. The Medical Institutions campus which is located on the East Baltimore, has the medical school, the nursing school and the Bloomberg School of Public Health located within its campus. Johns Hopkins university has various other institutions such as the Carey Business School, the School of Education, the Paul H, Nitze School of Advanced International Studies, the Applied Physics Laboratory among many others. The main Campus is spread over an area of over 140 acres with more than 26,000 Undergraduate and postgraduate students. The students are actively involved in athletic activities with its teams in over 23 sports, such as Basketball, soccer, baseball, fencing, swimming and many others. Johns Hopkins University made over $6 million in Total sports Related Revenues.
