History, Affiliations and Rankings
Hartpury was founded as an agricultural education centre after WWII, with only 50 students. Today, the university has more than 4,500 students studying at both the university and the college, which is a record number. Hartpury continued to grow until 1990, when a new Principal initiated a rapid expansion programme, commencing with the addition of a wider range of university courses. In 1992, the first higher education degree in Equine Studies was introduced, followed in 1994 by the first-degree programme in Equine Science. The first Masters's degree programme started in 1999, with the first PhD student appearing in 2004. Hartpury University is affiliated with UWE.

According to the results of the National Student Survey (NSS) 2022, Hartpury is the number one English Mainstream University in the category of 'Teaching on my Course'. Hartpury University also came second in 'Overall Satisfaction' and 'Academic Support', and third in 'Assessment and Feedback'. Several degree programmes, including the BSc (Hons) Agriculture/Applied Agriculture and the BSc (Hons) Equestrian Sports Science, received a perfect 100% student satisfaction rating. The notable alumni of Hartpury university are Ross Moriarty, Jonny May, Ellis Genge, Dan Robson, and Kelly Smith.
Student Diversity and Visiting Companies
Hartpury Students' Union (SU) is completely dedicated to promoting equality, diversity, and inclusion. Liberation Officers are members of the SU officer team who ensure that all students, regardless of race, gender, faith, gender identity, or incapacity, feel represented and have their voices heard. A Black Students' Officer, a Women Students' Officer, an LBGTQ+ Students' Officer, and a Disabled Students' Officer are among the Student Officers working to effect change in this area. The SU cooperates with the University's Head of Inclusivity to create an accessible and inclusive university experience for all members of the Hartpury community.
