Heidelberg Castle, known as Heidelberger Schloss in German, is a historic ruin located in Germany and serves as a prominent landmark of Heidelberg. It holds great significance as one of the most important Renaissance structures in the northern regions of the Alps.

After its partial demolition during the 17th and 18th centuries, the castle has only been partially reconstructed. Positioned 80 meters (260 ft) above the northern part of the Königstuhl hillside, it offers a commanding view of the old downtown area. To reach the castle, visitors can utilize the Heidelberger Bergbahn funicular railway, which runs from Heidelberg’s Kornmarkt to the summit of the Königstuhl.

The castle’s origins date back to before 1214, with subsequent expansions resulting in two separate castles by approximately 1294. However, in 1537, the upper castle was struck by lightning and destroyed. Over time, the structures underwent further expansions until around 1650, but subsequent wars and fires inflicted damage. In 1764, another lightning strike caused a fire, leading to the destruction of some of the rebuilt sections of the castle.
