Q. Some people believe that university students should be required to attend classes. Others believe that going to classes should be optional for students. Which point of view do you agree with? Use specific reasons and details to explain your answer.
Ans. I firmly believe that university students should be required to attend classes as attending classes has numerous benefits that are important for academic success and personal development. These benefits include access to expert knowledge, developing essential skills, and fostering a sense of discipline and responsibility.
Firstly, attending classes allows students to get valuable insights beyond textbook knowledge, sharing real-world applications and examples that enhance understanding. For example, during a science class, the professor might take students for practical classes which will deepen student’s understanding of complex concepts.
Secondly, regular class attendance helps students in the development of essential skills such as critical thinking, communication, and collaboration. In-class discussions and group activities encourage students to articulate their ideas clearly and work effectively with others. When a student participates in class debates it enhances their ability to construct and defend arguments.
Thirdly, attending regular classes fosters discipline and responsibility. It requires effective time management, prioritizing academic commitments, and adhering to a schedule—habits crucial for success in both academic and professional environments. For instance, consistent class attendance helps students develop organizational skills essential for meeting deadlines and managing workloads. Moreover, it promotes a sense of community and belonging, allowing students to build relationships with peers and professors. This supportive network can enhance their academic experience, with study groups providing emotional and academic support to help students stay motivated and succeed.
In conclusion, compulsory attendance enriches the university experience and equips students for future success as it facilitates access to expert knowledge, cultivates essential skills, instills discipline and responsibility, provides immediate feedback, and fosters a sense of community. Thus, I strongly advocate for this practice.
