Study in UK: Gates Cambridge Excellence Scholarship Application 2024 Opens in September 

The Gates Cambridge Scholarship Application for the January intake opens in the month of September this year. The international scholarship is one of the most prestigious scholarships in the world. The University of Cambridge applicants wanting to study PG/Ph.D. can apply for financial assistance.

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation established The Gates Cambridge Excellence Scholarship by donating US$210 million in October 2000 to the University. The scholarship covers visa fees and travel expenses, provides maintenance allowance, and several other benefits to the beneficiaries. The deadline for the scholarship is 5 December 2023 or 4 January 2024 depending on the course for the international students.

Gates Cambridge Excellence Scholarship Eligibility

Students wanting to study at the University of Cambridge can apply. The eligibility criteria for the Gates Cambridge Excellence Scholarship are as follows:

• Must be an international student (outside UK)
• The applicant must be willing to pursue a full-time Ph.D./Msc/Mlitt program or a 1 year PG program (courses not excluded from the scholarship)
• However, funding for part-time doctoral degree programs is available for October 2024 

Gates Cambridge Excellence Scholarship Benefits 

The Gates Cambridge Excellence Scholarship is fully funded. Therefore, selected students can receive several benefits. Some of the expenses covered by the scholarship program are as follows:

• The Cambridge University composition fee at the appropriate rate 
• A single airfare economy ticket at the beginning and the end of the course
• It covers the inbound visa charges of the Immigration health surcharge 
• Additionally, a maintenance allowance for a single student is provided. That is, £20,000 /INR 21.17 lakh for 12 months at the 2023-24 rate, pro-rata for courses that are less than 12 months in duration. However,  for Ph.D. students, the award is up to 4 years 
• Moreover, the scholarship provides several other benefits under its ‘discretionary component’. It includes academic development funding, dependent children allowance, fieldwork funding, paternity/maternity allowance, and hardship funding.

A total of 80 fully funded scholarships are available every year. Out of this, 2/3rd of the scholarship is for Ph.D. students, and the rest is for PG students. For the January intake, the scholarship application will open in the month of September. The scholarship committee accesses the intellectual ability, reasons for the course selection, commitment to improving the life of others, and leadership potential of the applicants.
