For the Digital Nomad Visa, Greek authorities recently made an announcement that from now on they will no longer permit in-country applications.

According to SchengenVisaInfo.com, the recently made new changes will come into effect starting from January 1, 2024.

The Digital Nomad Visa allows overseas persons to legally live and work in Greece for companies or clients located outside the country.

From the same date, visa applicants will need to apply through Greek consular posts, this means that applications must be filed in the applicant’s country of citizenship or residence. Processing times and documentary requirements differ from one country to another.

To apply for this visa, interested persons must be citizens from countries outside the European Union (EU), and meet certain things such as proof they work as digital nomads, hold a valid employment contract registered outside Greece. Moreover, these applicants must have a monthly salary of not less than €3,500.

Increase In The Number Of Digital Nomad Visa

According to Ekathimerini’s stats, the number of digital nomads to Greece is increasing at a good pace. In 2021, just 10 people filed a request for this visa, while in 2022, this number increased to 595. In February 2023, 70 people filed a request for the Digital Nomad Visa. On the other hand, Russia leads this number by 433 applications.

Greece May Gain This Number

According to a recent research by the “MIT Enterprise Forum,” which was released in early 2023, Greece may gain over €1.6 billion annually if it were to draw 100,000 digital nomads who would stay for an average of six months.

In order to attract internationals, the Greek Ministry of Tourism developed the Digital Nomads initiative in their several cities, majorly Ermoupolis, Heraklion, and Kalamata.

The Greek Republic’s Digital Nomad Visa validation period is one year, and it can be stretched to a maximum of three years down the line. Those who are planning to stay back in the country for more than one year, need to apply for a residence permit before their digital nomad visa run out.

On the other hand, many countries including Greece offer Digital Nomad Visa programs that significantly boost their economies.

Countries that offer Digital Nomad Visa are: Croatia, Cyprus, Estonia, Hungary,  Iceland, Latvia, Malta, Romania, the Netherlands and Norway.
