What is the Karsh International Scholarship?

To honour the extraordinary contributions made by international students to Duke University, the Karsh International Scholarship initiative was established in 2010 with the support of donations from Martha L. and Bruce A. Karsh. The Karsh International Scholarship program comprises a community of highly intelligent students who engage in academic research, interdisciplinary inquiry, and scholarship to help society through their extraordinary service. 

Students from 225 nationalities, like Afghanistan, Belgium, Bhutan, Switzerland, China, India, etc., are eligible to apply for the Karsh International Scholarship. International students willing to apply for this scholarship must have a brilliant academic track record, along with proven financial need, in order to be eligible for this scholarship. 

Benefits of the Karsh International Scholarship 

To give you a clear picture of the benefits provided under this scholarship, we have divided them into 3 categories. 

Financial Support 

When it comes to financial aid, under the Karsh International Scholarship, Students get the benefit of a grant that covers tuition fees for eight semesters (4 years), mandatory fees to Duke University and room and board. Students also get financial assistance for international and domestic summer experiences, which entail opportunities to do independent research in summer as well as during the academic year. 

Academic Community 

Along with financial support, the awardees of the Karsh International Scholarship will get the assistance of a community of international students, a faculty advisor and additional support from mentors from the office of University fellows and scholars. All the students who have been awarded this scholarship will become members of an intellectual community that highlights the importance of international students at Duke University and also engage in global dialogue. During their time on the Duke campus, Karsh International Scholarship holders will get to engage with program coordinators, faculty mentors and guest speakers and have an occasional field trip. 

Students during their first year at Duke University in the first year series of seminars will get to engage with each other as scholars, learn from other students on and off campus and have conversations with the larger Duke community. 

Enrichment Experiences 

After completing their first year at Duke University, the awardees of the Karsh International Scholarship can apply for further financial aid to enrich their education. This involves working at a laboratory at the Duke campus or anywhere else, being a part of independent research or service work, and internships in the private or government sector. Scholarship holders will get the assistance of faculty members to choose and plan for their educational enrichment experiences.

Eligibility Criteria for Karsh International Scholarship 

The following are the prerequisites that a candidate must clear in order to be eligible for the Karsh International Scholarship. 

1. In order to be eligible for the Karsh International Scholarship, students must have completed their high school education 

2. The student should be currently planning to pursue an undergraduate degree at Duke University and must be of a foreign nationality. 

3. Students from any discipline can apply for this scholarship. 

4. The student should have outstanding academic potential and leadership qualities.

Application Process for Karsh International Scholarship 

There is no separate application form that a student needs to fill out in order to apply for this scholarship. When an applicant applies for an undergraduate program at Duke University then they will be automatically considered for this scholarship, although they will also be required to submit the required documents that prove the need for financial support.
