IMAT Italy: An Overview
The Italian Ministry of Education, Universities and Research (MIUR) is responsible for creating and conducting the IMAT exam. Students interested in enrolling in a medical program in English take this exam. For example, to study medicine, dentistry, or surgery. This is a 100-minute subject-specific admissions test held in the English language. The exam registration is only open for 3 weeks. It starts in early July and ends around July.
This is not an online examination but a pen-and-paper test. Your knowledge of the 5 main sections is tested. That is:
- Reading skills and knowledge acquired during studies
- Logical reasoning and problem-solving
- Physics and Mathematics
- Biology
- Chemistry
Eligibility Criteria to Sit for IMAT
There is no age limit for the exam. However, most students are around 25-35 years of age. The general requirement is that you must have completed your 12th standard. Moreover, you must have studied Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. Additionally, you must be eligible to enrol at an Italian university.
IMAT Format 2025
The International Medical Admissions Test tests your knowledge of 5 important sections. The same is explained in the table below. The exam has negative marking of -0.4 points for every wrong answer, and +1.5 points for each correct answer.

What is a Good Score on the IMAT?
IMAT Italy deducts -0.4 points for wrong answers and grants +1.5 points for every correct answer. If you do not answer a question, no marks are given. The test is conducted out of 90 points, and you need at least 20 points to even rank.
A good score, however, depends on the specific university you want to study at. Each university sets its scores. Generally, a score above 50 is considered competitive in this exam. However, if you intend to study at top medical schools, you might have to score 55 or more. Non-EU students can find the exam to be competitive, and are sometimes requested to achieve higher scores.
IMAT Italy Fees for Indian Students
The exam fees for non-EU students, including Indian students, are provided below. Note: the official website does not specify the exact fees. Therefore, the fees given below are just an estimate. You will get to know the exact fees at the time of registration. The estimated fees are as follows:

You need to pay the fees before the deadline. The payment can be made by credit/debit card (mainly Visa/Mastercard).
How Can I Register for the IMAT Exam in India?
The IMAT Italy registration process is different for EU applicants and non-EU applicants. You can be considered as an EU applicant if you are a national, or a third-country national who has lived in an EU country with a residence permit for at least 1 year. If you are giving the exam from your home country, you will have to visit the Italian embassy/consulate in your country. The registration process is as follows:
- Visit the embassy when the pre-enrollment date is released.
- Thereafter, you will be informed of the documents required.
- The embassy will issue you a Declaration of Value. The document proves that you are eligible to study in an Italian university.
- You will have to submit documents like Form A (indicating the university that is your first choice), passport, photos and other documents. You might require additional documents (if you are applying for a student visa)
- Thereafter, make a ‘Universityitaly’ account, register and pay online
- Select the test centre where you want to take the exam
- You will receive two confirmation emails (one for confirmation of the test and the other for confirmation of payment. Print out both and bring it to the exam centre.
English Language Certifications for Registration
You do not need to show proof of an English language proficiency test for exam registration. However, the Italian embassy may request you to do the same, either to ensure that you are eligible for the course or for the student visa process. A simple registration does not require any English certification.

IMAT Italy Results: Anonymous Ranking and Dates
The International Medical Admissions Test results are released in three ways. First, students will receive an anonymous ranking, showing scores and corresponding barcode labels. The names of the students are not listed on this page. Secondly, personal results are released. A student can view this by logging into their account. Lastly, the final ranking is provided. The final ranking involves university rankings for admission. For this, a student has to visit the official website of the university and check their ranking.

What is the Difficulty Level of the IMAT exam?
International students find the exam to be moderately challenging. You need both strong scientific knowledge and critical thinking skills to clear the exam. Compared to other medical entrance exams, the International Medical Admissions Test is easier. For example, if you compare it to the BMAT in the UK. (The BMAT was replaced by BMSAT by Oxfrod).
