The High-Potential Individual (HPI visa) is a UK immigration route that is meant for students who have graduated from top global universities. The permits individuals to live and work in the country without a sponsorship or job offer. To get this visa, you must obtain a qualification equivalent to a UK bachelor’s, master’s, or PhD degree from an eligible university within the last 5 years. The UK Government releases the list of the eligible global universities. Your university must be among them.

1. You must have obtained a UK equivalent of a bachelor’s, master’s, or PhD degree from an eligible university.
2. You must have obtained this qualification within the last 5 years
3. Your English language proficiency level must be at least at the B1 level (CEFR). You can prove the same by clearing the Secure English Language Test (SELT). Otherwise, you degree must have been taught in English.
4. Besides this, you must have a balance of GBP 1,270 in your bank account for 28 consecutive days.
5. If you are already in the UK, know that you cannot switch from a graduate visa. 
6. However, you can get this visa if you have been studying full-time for a PhD for at least 24 months, or have completed your studies in the UK.
7. Know that you can only apply for this visa once in your life.

Documentation Requirements

Applications should submit their documents online in the form of a PDF along with the application form. Here’s a list of all the documents required for an HPI visa.

1. A valid passport or another international travel document highlighting your identity and nationality.
2. Proof of English proficiency score.
3. The statement provided to you by Ecctis while verifying your qualifications.
4. Applicant’s biometric residence permit (BRP)
5. You will have to show online proof of your immigration status if you are switching from another visa type.
6. Furthermore, if you are bringing your partner or children with you, then you must provide proof of your relationship with them.

*Note – If any candidate is not having their documents in English or Welsh, you need to provide a certified translation.

How to Apply for an HPI Visa?

The application process for the HPI visa is quite similar to the other work visa applications. Also, the application form is available online. Keep in mind your application will be rejected in case of misinformation. Follow the below-given instructions to apply for an HPI visa.

1. Visit the website of the UK Government
2. On the webpage, look for the Apply Now option and click on it.
3. Fill out the application process by entering all the information.
4. Review all the information and ensure that is correct
5. Pay the visa application fee of GBP 880. 
6. Upload the necessary documents, such as a passport and proof of qualification from an eligible university, among others.
7. Submit your application and wait for a confirmation message
8. At this stage, your visa application will be processed. The processing time is between 3 to 8 weeks, depending on whether you are living inside or outside the Uk at the time of application.
9. After the visa application is processed, a decision will be made.

Cost of a High-Potential Individual (HPI Visa)

The visa application fees are often non-refundable. The application fee is charged for your visa processing. Apart from this, you have to pay for the health care surcharge and the Ecctis Qualification Assessment (if applicable). You also need ot meet the financial requirements.

Processing Time for HPI Visa

The time taken for approval if the HPI visa is different for applicants, depending on whether they apply from within or outside the UK. It takes around 8 weeks to get the visa for those applying from within the UK, whereas it takes 3 weeks for those applying from outside.

Duration of Stay

The validity of a high-potential individual (HPI visa) in UK is usually 2 years. However, if you have a PhD or other doctoral qualification, then you can ge the visa for 3 years. The validity of the HIP visa cannot be extended. However, you can later on switch to any other visa you are qualified for.

Steps to Go From HPI Visa to Permanent Resident

You cannot directly go from an HPI visa to an indefinite leave to remain (ILR) in the UK. However, it is possible for you to eventually qualify for a PR. Here are some steps you can take to get the ILR or the PR in the UK.

1. Switch to a long-term visa, such as a skilled worker visa, that can qualify you for a PR.
2. To switch, you must have a job offer from a licensed employer in the UK. Ensure that the job you are offered provides you with the minimum salary.
3. Thereafter, stay in the UK for 5 continuous years with the eligible visa to meet the duration for PR.
4. Ensure that you pass the Life in the UK Test and meet English language requirements for settlement.
5. After 5 years apply, ensure that you meet all other PR requirements, and apply for an ILR.
6. If approved, you will get the right to stay in the UK permanently.
