World Day for Audiovisual Heritage 2023: History, Theme, Significance

The World Day for Audiovisual Heritage, which is celebrated annually, is observed on the 27th of October every year. This day is celebrated to honour all the audio-visual preservation professionals and organisations that safeguard our heritage for future generations. This day was selected by UNESCO in 2005 to raise awareness of the importance of preserving audiovisual treasures (films, video recordings, sound etc). History of Celebrating World Day for Audiovisual Heritage

In a UNESCO general session in 2005, a proposal to observe a World Day for Audiovisual Heritage was adopted. Finally, on October 27, 2007, the first World Day for Audiovisual Heritage was observed.

The main goal of the World Day for Audiovisual Heritage is to increase public awareness of the need for immediate action.

This day was created to raise awareness of the importance of preserving and protecting priceless audiovisual treasures for future generations. This day also emphasises how crucial it is to keep history intact and make it available to the general people.

Theme 2023

This year, the World Day for Audiovisual Heritage Day will be celebrated on 27 October with the theme: “Your Window to the World”. UNESCO is very keen on celebrating World Day for Audiovisual Heritage to honour audiovisual preservation professionals and institutions that safeguard our heritage for future generations.

Significance of World Day for Audiovisual Heritage

The main significance behind this day is to motivate people to preserve the work of professionals against the range of social, political, technical and financial factors. These factors may pose a threat to the safeguards of audio-visual heritage. Some of these threats could be obsolete technology, lack of attention, chemical decay etc.

This day will also remind the present generation to not forget their heritage while moving forward in their lives, especially in this digital age. 

The main aim behind this day is to resonate with the vision of UNESCO’s Memory of the World Project which was launched in 1992. It will provide full protection and recognition of cultural morals and practices without any hindrance.
