1. Battle at Brindis (1156)

The Battle of Brindisi saw the Byzantine Empire fighting against the Kingdom of Sicily for control of Southern Italy. Despite the Byzantine Empire’s successful conquests of many southern Italian cities, their defeat at Brindisi ended their attempt at reconquest.

2. 1st Indoor swimming pool opens (1742)

On May 28, 1742, the first indoor swimming pool, ‘The Bagnio,’ opened in Goodman’s Field, London. The Bagnio featured both a warm pool and a cool pool, which were used to teach swimming to those who had not yet mastered the art.

3. 1st black regiment left Boston to fight in the US Civil War (1863)

The 54th Massachusetts, the first Black regiment and a major force in the African-American Civil War, included 150 Black soldiers. The unit began recruiting in February 1863 and trained in camps at Boston. On May 28, 1863, they departed from Boston and became part of the X Corps.

4. Azerbaijan declares itself a Democratic Republic (1918)

The Azerbaijani National Council announced the independence of Azerbaijan in a meeting on May 28, 1918. Declared a democratic republic, Azerbaijan’s independence lasted for only 23 months before collapsing in April 1920, following the Soviet invasion of the country.

5. The women of Greece are given the right to vote (1952)

In 1926, Greece passed a law restricting voting rights to educated women over the age of 30 or women married to educated men. However, on May 28, 1952, all women were granted the right to vote on equal terms with men.
