Indira Gandhi was the first and only female Prime Minister of India. She was the daughter of Jawahar Lal Nehru who was the first prime minister of India. Indira Gandhi was the second longest-serving Prime Minister of India. She was present in office from January 1966 to March 1977 and again came into power from January 1980 until her assassination in October 1984. As a result of her victory in the Congress Party’s legislative leadership against Morarji Desai in the elections in early 1966, she succeeded Shastri as India’s Prime Minister after his passing.

In 1959, Indira Gandhi was elected as the President of the Congress Party. Later, after the sudden demise of Lal Bahadur Shastri, in 1966, she held the position of Prime Minister of India, hence becoming the first female Prime Minister of the country. She was soon rushed to the hospital but she passed away while she was there. Indira Gandhi was assassinated as a result of the attack she ordered on the Golden Temple to drive out the terrorists.
