What is NIRF?

Approved and launched by the MHRD in 2015, the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) is a structure outlining a methodology to rank institutions nationwide based on the Core Committee’s overall understanding and identification of the broad parameters for ranking various educational institutions and universities. The parameters cover:

1. Teaching, Learning, and Resources
2. Research and Professional Practices
3. Graduation Outcomes
4. Outreach and Inclusivity
5. Perception

Rankings based on this framework were first released on 4th April 2016. But the 2017 rankings saw significant changes in some of the evaluation sub-parameters. Further details related to the ranking criteria can be found in this document.

The 8th Edition of the NIRF Rankings was released on 5th June 2023 by the Union Minister of State for Education and External Affairs Rajkumar Ranjan Singh. Rankings this year were released for 11 different academic categories including:
