✈️ How to Join the Indian Air Force: A Comprehensive Guide

A career in the Indian Air Force is not just a job; it’s a calling. It is a commitment to serving your nation with honour, courage, and dedication. If you are ready to take on this noble path, start your preparations and pursue your dream of soaring high with the Indian Air Force.

If you have always wanted to fly high and serve your country, joining the Indian Air Force might be the perfect way to do it. If you do not know how to become an Indian Air Force officer, we will walk you through the steps to join the IAF and become an Indian Air Force officer or airman in this blog.

👩‍✈️ Choose Your Path

The Indian Air Force has different ways for you to get in, depending on your education and interests. Here are some common paths:

National Defence Academy (NDA): If you’re in the 10+2 stage, you can appear for the NDA entrance exam. The NDA is a tri-service academy that trains cadets for the Army, Navy, and Air Force.

Combined Defence Services (CDS) Exam: If you have a graduate degree, you can take the CDS exam. Successful candidates aspiring for Air Force will join the Air Force Academy.

AFCAT (Air Force Common Admission Test): AFCAT is for graduates interested in officer-level posts, including flying and ground duty branches. AFCAT is Primarily for Women and Men who once once selected will be inducted into the Air Force for 10+4 Years or Short Service Commission.

Technical Entry:  If you are an engineering graduate or pursuing a B.Tech, you can apply for the Technical Entry Scheme.

Airmen Entry:  If you are looking for a career as an airman, there are various entry-level positions based on your educational qualifications.

Age and Marital Status

The age and marital status rules vary depending on the entry method. Normally, you should be Unmarried and between 

• Flying Branch: 20 and 24 years for AFCAT and CDS entries. 
• Technical Ground Duty: 20 and 26 Years for AFCAT and CDS entries

📚 Educational Qualifications

To join the IAF, you need to meet certain educational qualifications based on the entry path you choose. Be sure to check the specific requirements for the position you are interested in. Generally, for officer-level posts, a bachelor’s degree is required.

Air Force Flying Branch Eligibility- Educational Qualifications

The candidates applying for the Flying Branch vacancies must have the following educational qualifications.

• Candidates must have received at least a 50% grade in math and physics in their 10+2 years and must also have completed a three-year degree programme in any discipline at a recognised university with at least 60% overall or an equivalent grade point average.
• A 4-year BE/B Tech degree with at least 60% or an equivalent grade from an accredited university is required.
• A minimum of 60% in Sections A and B of the Associate Membership exam of the Institution of Engineers (India) or the Aeronautical Society of India from an accredited university, or the equivalent.

Ground Duty Technical in Air Force – Educational Qualifications

These are the list of Technical Ground Duties for AFCAT and their Educational Qualification Requirements.

Aeronautical Engineer (Electronics)

• At least 50% in both mathematics and physics at the 10+2 level 
• A minimum of four years of undergraduate study or integrated post-graduate training in engineering or technology from a recognised university, or passing scores of at least 60% on the Graduate Membership Exam of the Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers or Sections A and B of the Associate Membership of the Institution of Engineers (India) or the Aeronautical Society of India.

Aeronautical Engineer (Mechanical)  

• A minimum of 60% marks each in Physics and Mathematics at 10+2 level 
• Integrated post-graduate degree in engineering or technology with a minimum of four years of study from an accredited university, or successful completion of the Sections A and B examination for associate membership in the Institution of Engineers (India) or the Aeronautical Society of India by actual study with a minimum of 60% marks or an equivalent in the following disciplines. 

Administration & Logistics

• Graduate Degree in any discipline from a recognized university with a minimum of 60% marks or equivalent or cleared section A & B examination of Associate Membership of Institution of Engineers (India) or Aeronautical Society of India from a recognized university with a minimum of 60% marks or equivalent.

Accounts

• B.Com. Degree from a recognized university with a minimum of 60% marks or equivalent.

Education Section

• MBA/ MCA or MA/ MSc degree in English/ Physics/ Mathematics/ Chemistry/ Statistics/ International relations/ International Studies/ Defence Studies/ Psychology/ Computer Science/ IT/ Management/ Mass Communication/ Journalism/ Public Relations with a minimum of 50% marks in aggregate of all papers put together.

Meteorology

• Post Graduate Degree in any Science stream/ Mathematics/ Statistics/Geography/Computer Applications/Environmental Science/ Applied Physics/ Oceanography/Meteorology/Agricultural Meteorology/Ecology & Environment /Geophysics/Environmental Biology with a minimum of 50% marks in aggregate of all papers put together (Provided Maths and Physics were studied at Graduation Level with a minimum of 55% marks in each).  

NCC Flying Branch

• NCC Air Wing Senior Division ‘C’ certificate acquired on or after January 01, 2017, is mandatory. 
• Candidates should have mandatorily passed with a minimum of 60% marks each in Maths and Physics at 10+2 and Graduate with a minimum of three years degree course in any discipline from a recognized University with a minimum of 60% marks or equivalent. 
• BE/B Tech degree (Four years course) from a recognized University with a minimum of 60% marks or equivalent. Candidates who have cleared Section A & B examination of Associate Membership of Institution of Engineers (India) or Aeronautical Society of India from a recognized University with a minimum of 60% marks or equivalent.  

📌 Selection Process: AFSB

Joining the IAF is no cakewalk. It involves written exams, interviews, fitness tests, and medical check-ups. If you want to be a pilot, you’ll need to pass a pilot aptitude battery test and go through serious training.

After clearing the written exams, candidates are shortlisted to appear for the Service Selection Board (SSB) interview, a critical phase in the selection process. The AFSB interview is a comprehensive evaluation that takes place in two stages.

🏋️‍♀️ Physical Fitness Tests and Medical Examination

Candidates must meet the physical and medical standards set by the Indian Air Force. These standards encompass height, weight, vision, and general physical fitness. Aspirants must also undergo a thorough medical examination to ensure they are in good health and can meet the demands of service.

🏃‍♀️ Merit List and Training

Candidates who successfully clear all stages of the selection process are placed on a merit list. Those who make it to the list are offered admission to the Indian Air Force Academy or other training centres for their respective courses and trades. The training is designed to prepare candidates for their roles within the Air Force.
