How to Calculate the UGC NET Percentile

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has given the National Testing Agency (NTA) the responsibility of administering the UGC-NET test, which is intended to ascertain an Indian national’s eligibility for the positions of “Assistant Professor” and “Junior Research Fellowship and Assistant Professor” in Indian universities and colleges. In this article, we have tried to explain in detail, how to calculate the UGC NET Percentile.

Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) awards and/or assistant professorship eligibility are contingent on the candidate’s overall performance in UGC-NET Papers I and II. The policies and procedures of the relevant universities, colleges, or state governments, as it relate to the hiring of assistant professors, apply to candidates who pass the eligibility test for the position.

How UGC NET Cut-off is Calculated?

Together with the official results, the National Testing Agency (NTA) will release the UGC NET exam cutoff. The cut off lists will be available for download on the official website, https://ugcnet.nta.ac.in/ for candidates.

The lists of eligible candidates for the UGC NET will be divided into two categories: “Assistant Professor” and “Assistant Professor and Junior Research Fellowship (JRF).” Applicants from general categories must receive a minimum qualifying score of 40%, while applicants from reserved categories must receive a minimum score of 35%.

The UGC NET cutoff is calculated through a series of stages. Applicants who are unsure about how to determine the UGC NET 2024 cutoff marks should review the steps taken by NTA:

  • Minimum 6% of all candidates appearing in both UGC NET exam papers must fulfil the requirements for eligibility (total slots or eligibility for assistant professor).
  • The total number of slots is distributed among the candidates based on their availability for the exam, in accordance with the reservation policy or guidelines.
  • In order to be considered for Assistant Professor and JRF posts, candidates must aim for papers I and II.

Candidates taking the UGC NET Exam receive a distinct set of questions. It is possible that the question papers distributed in various shifts have varying levels of difficulty. When compared to other sets of questions, some candidates might wind up trying a comparatively harder set.

Candidates who take the relatively harder exam are probably going to score worse than those who take the easier one. In order to address this issue, a “Normalisation procedure based on Percentile Score” will be employed to guarantee that applicants experience no discrimination or advantage as a result of the exam’s level of difficulty.

How is the UGC NET Percentile Score calculated?

Percentile scores are used by NTA as part of the normalisation process. Based on the relative performance of every student, the percentile scores are determined. For every exam session, the marks earned are converted into a scale from 100 to 0.

The percentile score on an exam is the proportion of candidates that received raw scores that are either the same or lower than that specific percentile. As a result, each session’s top scorer will receive the same percentile of 100, which is desirable. Additionally, the scores that fall between the top and lowest are translated to the relevant percentiles.

When creating merit lists, the percentile score—which is the examination’s normalised score rather than the candidate’s raw marks—will be utilised. The calculation will be performed up to seven decimal places in order to minimise ties and prevent bunching.

The percentile score of a candidate for UGC NET is calculated via:

(100 × No. of candidates who appeared in the Session with raw score equal to or less than the candidates) / (Total number of candidates who appeared in the ’Session’ )
