To be eligible for the GATE Electrical Engineering (EE) exam, you need to fulfil a few criteria:
- Educational Qualification:
- You should have completed a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology. This could be a four-year program after completing 10+2 or a three-year program after a Diploma in Engineering/Technology.
- Alternatively, if you have a Master’s degree in any branch of Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Applications, or an equivalent field, you are also eligible.
- Age Limit:
- Fortunately, there is no specific age limit for appearing in the GATE exam. So, irrespective of your age, you can apply and give it a shot.
- Nationality:
- If you are an Indian national, you are definitely eligible to apply for the GATE EE exam.
- Additionally, candidates from Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Ethiopia, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are also allowed to apply for the exam.
- Number of Attempts:
- The good news is that there is no limit to the number of times you can appear for the GATE exam. So, if you don’t succeed on your first attempt, you can try again in subsequent years.

GATE Electrical Engineering 2023 Exam Pattern
The exam pattern of the GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) Electrical Engineering (EE) exam typically follows the following format:
- The GATE EE exam is conducted in an online computer-based mode.
- The GATE EE exam consists of a single paper.
- The duration of the exam is 3 hours (180 minutes).
- The GATE EE exam is usually conducted for a total of 100 marks.
- The exam includes two types of questions:
- Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs): These questions have options, and candidates need to select the correct answer. They may carry 1 or 2 marks each, and there may be negative markings for incorrect answers.
- Numerical Answer Type (NAT) Questions: These questions require candidates to enter the answer using a virtual numeric keypad. There are no options provided for these questions, and no negative marking is applicable.
6. Sections: The GATE EE exam typically consists of two sections:
- General Aptitude (GA) Section: This section tests the candidate’s proficiency in general aptitude, including verbal ability and numerical reasoning. It usually carries 15% of the total marks.
