Requirements to Become a Teacher

  • Bachelor of Education (BEd): The first and most basic requirement to become school teacher is to own a BEd degree. It’s a two-year degree that teaches a student basic skills required to become a teacher.
  • Teacher Eligibility Test (TET): Other basic requirement is clearing the TET examination, conducted either at the central (CTET) or state level (e.g., UPTET, MPTET). It is only applicable in some states.
  • Primary Teachers (Class 1-5): Some states require a two-year Diploma in Elementary Education (D.El.Ed.) along with a graduation degree.
  • Upper Primary Teachers (Class 6-8): Graduation with B.Ed or appearing in the final year of B.Ed is generally the requirement.
  • Senior Secondary Teachers (Class 9-12): A postgraduate degree in the teaching subject along with B.Ed is required.
