Mawsynram, which is located in Meghalaya receives the highest rainfall in India. It gets most of its rainfall from the Indian Monsoon’s Bay of Bengal branch. Therefore, the majority of the rain in Mawsynram is in the monsoon season. As per the Guinness Book of World Records, in the year 1985, Mawsynram received 26,000 mm (1000 in) rainfall.
Known as the land of clouds, it is located in the East Khasi Hills, which is a part of Northeast India. It is situated almost 65 km away from the capital of Meghalaya – Shillong.

The winds of the Bay of Bengal Monsoon that move towards the South-West direction get obstructed by the hills and the concentration of warm and moist winds causes heavy rainfall. Due to a lot of rainfall, landfalls are quite common at Mawsynram therefore, people start preparing well before the rainy season.
Earlier Cherrapunji was considered the place that receives the highest rainfall but it later got changed when it was observed that Mawsynram receives the most rainfall. Cherrapunji and Mawsynram are 16 km away from each other and both are located on the East Khasi Hills in Meghalaya.
