Functions of the Vice President of India

The Indian Constitution highlights the important role and authority of the Vice President. Moreover, these are separate from their duties when acting as the President. Furthermore, Articles 63 to 71, under Part V of the Constitution, outline the functions, powers, election process, and removal procedures for the Vice President. Additionally, these articles outline the significant powers and functions of the Vice President. What are the Main Functions of the Vice President?

Furthermore, here are the 4 Functions of the Vice President of India: 

  • After the election and confirmation process, the Vice President of India assumes responsibility for one of the houses of Parliament.
    • Specifically, the Vice President serves as the ex-officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha which is the Council of States. 
    • In this role, the Vice President’s duties are similar to those of the Speaker of the Lok Sabha.
  • If the President of India is unable to perform their duties due to unavoidable circumstances, the Vice President steps in as the Acting President.
    • Moreover, they wield all the powers and responsibilities of the presidency. 
    • The Vice President can serve in this acting capacity for up to 6 months until a new presidential election is held.
  • According to the constitutional provisions of India, the Vice President is not a member of the Rajya Sabha and does not possess any powers associated with Rajya Sabha membership.
    • The Vice President does not have the right to vote on matters within the Rajya Sabha. However, except in the case of a tie, hence where they can cast a deciding vote.
  • While the Vice President is fulfilling the role of Acting President, their responsibilities as the ex-officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha are suspended.
