Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, also known as Virginia Tech was established in 1872 and started its journey as the Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College. In 1944, the name officially changed to Virginia Polytechnic Institute. It has been accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and has been academically affiliated with the Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU), The National Sea Grant College Program, Universities Research Association, and the Space Grant Colleges. In terms of Sporting Affiliations, Virginia tech has been affiliated with NCAA Division I FBS - ACC.
