History, Affiliations and Rankings
William Richardson Davie drafted the legislation creating the University in 1789. He and his colleagues trustees laid the foundation stone for the first structure, Old East, in 1793. When the first students arrived in 1795, UNC was the only public institution in the era to provide degrees. In 1845, the School of Law was founded. It’s affiliation is with URA AAU SURA ORAU. University of North Carolina ranked #102 in QS Top University Rankings in 2023.

UNC scored 54 Rhodes Scholars since the program began in 1902, 40 Luce Scholars for internship in Asia, 51 Goldwater Scholars, including 33 since 2000 and 514+ Fulbright Student Program Awards for global research and study since 1949.
