The University of Duisburg-Essen was founded in 1654 and re-established on 1 January 2003, as a merger of the Gerhard Mercator University of Duisburg and the University of Essen. Its affiliation is with Aurora, UAMR – University Alliance Metropolis Ruhr, DAAD, DFG, IRUN. It ranked third in a global comparison of the performance of the best universities founded since the turn of the Millennium, 14th among the best 200 universities worldwide younger than 50 years old by Times Higher Education ranking. The University's main campus is situated in the heart of the metropolitan city of Ruhr in Germany. The university possesses two green and compact campuses that are diverse and rich in culture.
