History, Affiliations and Rankings
Jane and Leland Stanford established the Leland Stanford Junior University, now known as Stanford University in 1885 in honour of their only child, Leland Jr., who died of typhoid fever at the age of 15. Following his death in 1884, the Stanfords resolved to put their fortune to good use by helping other people's children. Stanford is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC). The university is also affiliated with the Association of American Universities (AAU), Conceive Design Implement Operate (CDIO) and Space-grant. This university has been ranked 3rd by the QS World University Rankings 2022 whereas the university rankings as declared by THE (Times Higher Education) for the year 2022 ranks Stanford at #3.
Infrastructure, Campuses and Courses
The main campus of Stanford University is situated on 8,180 acres in the heart of the San Francisco Peninsula. Stanford has 49 miles of roads, two separate water systems, three dams, two open irrigation reservoirs and three closed potable water reservoirs, 88 miles of water mains, and a post office. Heat recovery and thermal storage are used by Stanford's Central Energy Facility to increase the efficiency of the university's heating and cooling systems. The university has seven schools namely, Graduate School of Business, School of Earth, Energy & Environmental Sciences, Graduate School of Education, School of Engineering, School of Humanities and Sciences, Stanford Law School and School of Medicine which offers numerous undergraduate and graduate degrees in various disciplines.
Accomplishments and Alumni
Stanford’s areas of excellence span seven schools along with research institutes, the arts and athletics. It has an endowment value of $37.8 billion. The faculty works closely with students and conducts groundbreaking research. The university researchers are working on 7,900+ externally sponsored projects worth a total budget of $1.69 billion. Stanford faculty are leaders in their fields with their accomplishments recognized across the disciplines. Today, Stanford has 2,288 members of the professoriate faculty. There are 682 members appointed to endowed professorships. Stanford University's notable alumni include 35 Nobel Prize winners since its founding. Stanford’s Fall 2021 community of scholars includes 10 National Medal of Science recipients,4 Pulitzer Prize winners, 6 National Humanities Medal recipients, 3 Kavli Prize laureates and 7 A.M. Turing Award winners while on faculty. There are currently more than 220,000 Stanford alumni all around the world.
Student Diversity and Visiting Companies
In 2021, Stanford University awarded 1,511 bachelor's degrees. The university has a total of 7,645 undergraduate students and 9,292 graduate students enrolled. Women account for 51% of the student population, while men account for 49%. International students from 77 countries make up nearly 13% of the student body. First-generation college students account for nearly 18% of the student body. The university is a perfect example of beautiful ethnic diversity, with people from all walks of life: 25% Asian, 8% Black or African American, 18% Hispanic or Latino, 12% International, 9% Two or more races, and 23% White.
